One of the best ways of overcoming stage fright is to become proficient with speaking in front of an audience. The only way that you can really do this is by being prepared well in advance and then by practicing it over and over again. There are very few people who are able to get up in front of a group and began speaking confidently the first time. You should not expect that the very first time you get up in front of a group everything will go flawlessly, and neither should your audience. Keeping this in mind will help you to be able to improve each and every time you get up in front of a group. Here are some ways that you can become a good speaker with practice.

Before you can speak intelligently about anything, you need to make sure that you understand the subject. You can't understand the subject unless somebody either teaches you about it or else you do the research necessary to become knowledgeable about it.

In order to be proficient at speaking and to be happy with your abilities you need to be prepared before you take the stage. Everybody has stage fright in one degree or another but some people are able to effectively use that stage fright in order to keep them on their toes, so to speak. Don't expect that you will ever completely get rid of the jitters before you get up on stage. Use those jitters, however, to keep you alert and focused on the project at hand. In order to appear confident on the stage you need to have at least a little bit of knowledge about how an effective speaker appears to the audience. Everything about you from the way you dress to your gestures and the way you stand will silently reflect your abilities to your audience. One of the best ways to see how you will look to a group is to videotape yourself giving your presentation and then to watch it. Even though you will not have the degree of nervousness as you would in front of a live audience, you will still be able to pick out any problem areas and correct them ahead of time.

One more thing that any effective speaker does is to use pausing in an appropriate manner. They will do this in order to emphasize their main points and also to change from subject to subject. If you want to come across as poised and knowledgeable in front of your audience then you need to use pausing effectively. One of the best ways to make sure that you do this is to actually mark your notes at points where it would be appropriate to insert a pause. This will help you to be able to remember to pause at this juncture.

By using these various techniques in your speaking you will become poised in front of your audience. They will respond more to your speaking in a positive way and that will give you the confidence to overcome any stage fright that might be lingering.
